Which Mold Steel Used in China?

If we want to know how to choose right mold steel, we have to know what factors related to mold steel.

Molds Life. Molds life is the quantity of plastic molded parts the mold can make. Mold life is the most important factor for mold making. It is the key for you to choose right material. For a long mold life mold, you choose cheap and bad mold steel, it can not reach the required mold life even you can not make the plastic material by this mold. Because mold will be broken during plastic injection molding. For a short mold life mold, it will waste your money if you choose too excellent mold steel. In order to choose right mold steel material, divided the mold life into five classes as following. Class A mold. 1,000,000 shots mold. In USA, it is called SPI 101 mold. Class B mold. 500,000-1,000,000 shots mold. In USA, it is called SPI 102 mold. Class C mold. 500,000 shots mold, In USA, it is called SPI 103 mold. Class D mold. 100,000 shots molds mold. In USA, it is called SPI 104 mold. Class E mold. 500 shots molds. It also can be called rapid mold or rapid tooling. In USA, it is called SPI 105 mold.

Class A molds, the hardness of core and cavity steel have to be over 52-54 HRC. So you can choose 1.2344, 1.2343, H11, H13, 1.2767, 2083, S136 for cavity, core and slider. But for angle pin or lifter, you have to choose SKD11 or SKD61. Realhao Industrial has recommended you six kinds of steel for Class A Mold.

What kind of mold material will be used for an exact mold?It is depended on other factors. You can know it from the mold steel specification. It will be attached at the end of this file. But we can make a brief introduction here. 1.2344 mold steel: hardness of 48-52 HRC, 225HB after quenched. Can be used as plastic injection mold core and cavity mold steel. It is mainly used as plastic injection mold steel. 1.2343 mold steel: hardness of 52-56 HRC, 240HB after quenched. Can be used as plastic injection mold core and cavity mold steel.  It is mainly used as plastic injection mold steel. H11 mold steel. It is similar to 1.2343. But it has been used more in North America. H13 mold steel. It is similar to 1.2344. But it has been used more in North America. But it has been used as die-casting tools frequently. 2083 mold steel: hardness of 52-56 HRC, 240HB after quenched. Can be used as die-casting mold core and cavity mold steel.  It is mainly used as plastic injection mold steel. SKD11 and SKD61 are Japanese steel. The most important is all of those steel for Class A mold have to be quenched.

Class B Mold. The hardness of core and cavity have to be over 48-52 HRC. So you can choose 1.2344, H13 mold steel. For slider and life, you can use 1.2344 or SKD11 or 61.

Class C Mold. The hardness of core and cavity has to be over 30 HRC. You can choose 1.2738, 1.2738H. If the plastic material is of corrosion. You have to nitride the steel.

Class D mold. The hardness of core and cavity has to be over 22HRC. You can choose P20, 1050C etc.

Class E mold. The hardness of core and cavity has to be over 22HRC. But you can choose aluminum alloy, 1050C, P20. Aluminum alloy is easily to be machined.

  Plastic Material. What kind of plastic material will be molded in the mold?Different plastic materials are of different specifications and features. Some plastic material can corrode the steel. So you have to choose the corrosion resistance steel such as 1.2344, 1.2343, 2083 ,S136 etc.

Cavity Numbers. How many cavities the mold has. The more cavities the mold is of, the more good mold steel required.

Gate system: What kind of gate system the mold has. For sub gate, you have to good mold steel because the gate size is very small. It is easily damaged during injection molding. But sometimes, we can insert the gate block with good mold steel. If it was damaged, just change the gate inserted.

Structure of plastic parts. If the parts is very big (over 500mm). We have to make solid cavity or core for the mold. Considering mold steel price and cost, low hardness steel will be used for solid cavity or core for long mold life mold such as Class A mold and Class B mold.

Surface treatment of plastic parts. Class A and Class B mold with mirror polishing, 1.2344, 1.2343 even S136 will be used. Class C and Class D mold with high glossary polishing, 1.2312, 1.2311, 1.2738 and 1.2738H will be used. But mold steel has to be nitride.  Class C and Class D mold with special texture, 1.2312, 1.2311, 1.2711 and 1.2738 will be used.
